We spend much of the week with Dave & Beverly Phillips and Martha, and have a wonderful time.

  • One of my favorite memories of this trip was being in a long line at Pirates of the Caribbean and having a great conversation with Dave Phillips.  I have no idea why that memory sticks.

Mark & Jeanne were selected to be part of the action for the backstage special effects tour.  We discovered that we have zero acting talent.

  • We initially stay at a Homewood Suites just outside the park.  Its very nice with suite-type rooms, but it doesn’t “feel” right.  We can’t define what it is that made us feel uncomfortable, but the breaking point came when one of the kids remarked that they didn’t feel safe.  Mid-week we spontaneously decide to check out early and we move into the Disney World Port Orleans Riverside resort.  What a difference – now we have the right “feeling”.   Many years later, upon reflection, it appears that this was some sort of socioeconomic stratification.  Its very arrogant to say this out loud, but they just weren’t our “class” of people.   The lowest hotel price isn’t attractive if we feel uncomfortable.  On the other side of the coin, we don’t fit in at the highest cost places either.  They also make us uncomfortable.  Since that experience we’ve been much more tuned to this dynamic and we always ask “will we fit in”.  We’ve also found that where we fit has changed over time, so its something we talk about when ever we approach a new location.
