Ingredients
- 3 slices bacon Diced. Add extra bacon if you wish.
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 cup sliced onions
- 3 cups cubed potatoes
- 1/2 cup diced celery
- 5 cups hot water
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp pepper
- 3.5 cups diced tomatoes
- 1.5 cups diced carrots
- 3 cups clam broth
- 2 cans minced clams, drained
- 1 tbsp parsley
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme (This is in addition to the thyme listed above)

Instructions
- Saute diced bacon in a deep kettle until crisp, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in 1 tsp. thyme and onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender.
- Add potatoes, celery, hot water, salt and pepper. Cover. Simmer 5 minutes
- Add tomatoes, carrots, clam broth. If you don't have clam broth you may substitute additional water. Simmer, uncovered over very low heat for 1 hour.
- Add clams, parsley and 1/2 tsp thyme. Bring to a boil. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes.
- Add salt to taste.
Recipe Notes
I usually make a double recipe and freeze half of the chowder for a future serving.
